About Noiduin
Noiduin (I cast a spell) is a Finnish Dark Folk act hailing from Pori, located on the Western coast of Finland.
Noiduin draws its inspiration from Finnish mythology and folklore, and the songs are often based on ancient Finnish spell poems. One of the focal points and a big part of Noiduin's charm are the self-built traditional intruments like talharpa, kantele and witchdrums which together create an otherwordly atmosphere.
As a live band Noiduin operates as:
Jemina - Vocals, talharpa
Henri - Vocals, talharpa, kantele
Matilda - Vocals, jaw harp, percussions
Mikko - Drums, percussions
History
Some years ago after hearing wonderful jouhikko and talharpa players such as Pekko Käppi and Einar Selvik, Finnish multi-instrumentalist Jemina became fascinated with the jouhikko's sound and desperately wanted to find an instrument of her own. Back then, the instruments in question weren't really lying around behind every corner and as an art student pockets were so empty that purchasing one turned out the be an impossible task. The art school though, had good woodworking facilities, so the only option left was to build one by herself.
The first bow strokes on the finished instrument were a life-changing moment and the music and songs seemed to arise as if by themselves. Jemina decided to buy the cheapest recording equipment available just to see what would happen, and slowly a four song EP started to take its shape. Henri, who Jemina met during this process, was working with his own kantele-project Myrrys and it seemed only appropriate that he would feature in the vocals on two songs, Hiien hurtta and Karhun synty. Finally EP "Korven kolkon kainalossa" was self-released in 2022 and Jemina sang all the female parts and played all the instruments on the EP. Korven kolkon kainalossa was well received by listeners and led to collaborations with the German dark folk project Bjorth and Swedish Nattramn.
Now
In 2023 Henri joined as an official member and Noiduin released its second EP Alinen on September 7th 2023. As requests to perform live had slowly been increasing since the first EP, Henri asked his long-time friend Mikko to join as a drummer, and shortly after that Matilda also joined as a jack of all trades. They made their first live appearance on the Pakanalliset Syysmessut (Pagan Autumn Fair) in Helsinki in October 2023. The instrument building has also continued, leading into a wide variety of different kind of talharpas, drums and rattles that can also be seen on stage with them.
